Narrative

The scene: a busy outdoor mall. Its nearing the end of summer and the town is hosting one of its miniature festivals. The streets are crowded with people from many different cultures who came to enjoy today's activities.

She had willingly stayed behind while her other two companions searched through a local shop. The young woman sat in the shade, trying to avoid being in the way of pedestrian traffic. In the distance, she saw a group of what seemed to be Chinese girls performing a lovely dance with parasols. Their white and light blue dresses flowed in the wind with their synchronized movements.

Just to the north, she could see clouds forming, giving the promise of an afternoon rain storm. However, it was still another hour walk back to her home and she didn't bring an umbrella, not that she cared.

Despite the emotional unpleasantries of the morning, she still wanted to enjoy her afternoon. She stood up when her group returned and they started walking west. On the way, they passes a restaurant where she saw an old coworker who she was rather fond of. As much as she wanted to stop and say hello, but didn't.

Moving along, her group made a detour into a bookstore where she trotted off to the only section of a bookstore she ever visits. The selection they carried had slowly diminished over the last few years, which, all things considered was probably a good thing, at least for her wallet.

After searching the bookstore for her company, she realized they got separated and left the building. She sat outside the store waiting for them to return. This gave her the chance to to gather her thoughts.

Whether the rest of the day would turn out alright, she didn't know. As long as she kept in good spirits and didn't dwell on the more sour moments of the day, she at least had a fighting chance.

Until next time. . .
